Domestic Violence Class

Last night I attended my first domestic violence session, 1 of 52. Since I have to take it no matter what and spend about $1,500, I hope to learn something from this class. There were individuals from all walks of life, some with criminal background and others who are in a similar situation as myself.

The focus of the class seems to be what we could have done to prevent the situation we’re in today instead of blaming someone else. The basics are that you cannot control or change others, but you can control and change yourself.

The class had a positive tone overall, with a few individuals not showing any interest. There was a guy and my first impression of him was Al Queda recruit, but he turned out to be the class clown. Go figure! When it was my turn to share my story, after a few minutes, the room went silent. I could tell that though we all have similar stories, mine was unlike anyone elses.

It was an interesting experience, more like group therapy. I’m keeping an open mind and expect to learn things from the group and hope that they learn something from me and my experience.
